Praise for larkspur:
This post-romantic, melancholic, and sensitive speaker is THE artist. The poems are full of such a prehensile yearning. Its not exactly sublimation, all this Nature, but it is about love and sex. But at times the poems are so shamelessly romantic (x2, for instance, and I mean that in a good way - the form pulls it off) or they console the fever of the darkness with that strange consoling voice evident in "Melancholy". Austin's lineation and precise wording, and his ear (great, lifting rhythms) turn the sentimental into a kind of lament in the face of obliteration, and yet it is comforting. There's a kind of naturalism here, and it's a sort of Garden of Eden for the male figure and the YOU that so frequently appears ("you will be / you will be") and it really works with the speaker's fight against the ultimate end.
